This write-up is about David Terrell's Dodger/Bimini combination. David has taught sailing to students from the TC Power Squadron for the past ten years. His boat, Scholarship II #432, is equipped so that he can sail well into his senior years. All controls lead to the cockpit. You will notice many unique features on his boat in some of the general photos. His contact information is listed in the CBAA Fleet Roster. Feel free to contact him directly about the Dodger/Bimini or any other inquiries.
The Dodger/Bimini was built by Grand Traverse Canvas, Traverse City, MI. in 2014. The fabric is Sunbrella. The Dodger frame and canvas cost $4,000. The bimini frame and canvas was another $1,500 and the side curtains were an extra $500. The bimini can be separated from the dodger so the dodger can be used alone. For the bimini to be left in place and the dodger removed would require an additional frame for the front edge of the bimini. The side curtains enclose the entire cockpit area. The unique feature are the handholds on either outside of the dodger and overhead at the dodger bimini juncture. Because these handholds are not just a pretty face the Stainless Steel framework is of a much stronger design than would be needed to just hold up the canvas. This has turned out to be a proven design. There is a little wear at the points the handholds are bolted through the canvas and the clear windows are a little fogged. (Plastic polish would clean this up.) In speaking with David in June of 2021 he would not make any changes in the design. He stated that: "It has functioned as it was designed to do." The attached photos speak of the durability. The first set were taken underway in October of 2014. The second set were taken dockside in June 2021.
